Sequoia Healthcare District is celebrating 75 years of supporting our community’s health! It all began in 1946 when a group of nine women led by Mary "Dove" Beeger appealed to the city council in Redwood City for a hospital to serve the communities of southern San Mateo County. Voters of Redwood City, Belmont, San Carlos, Menlo Park, Portola Valley, Woodside and Atherton elected to form a "hospital district." Thus began the construction and completion of Sequoia Hospital in 1949-1950. 

The hospital district managed Sequioa Hospital for over 40 years until 1996 when Catholic Healthcare West (CHW) took over operations and became financially responsible for the hospital. The Sequoia Hospital District was soon after renamed the Sequoia Healthcare District (SHD), and the annual tax revenue received was redirected to support community health. This women’s history month we want to recognize the contributions of our amazing women team who help Sequoia Healthcare District thrive every day.

SHD CEO – Pamela Kurtzman 

Pamela Kurtzman has remained committed to the district’s mission and vision since joining in 2006 to launch the HeartSafe Program.  She was later appointed Director of Healthy Youth Initiatives in 2010, Director of Grants and Programs in 2014 before becoming CEO in January 2018. As CEO, she leads District efforts to foster health equity. 

Grants Development Director - Jenny Bratton 

Jenny Bratton strengthens community partnerships by providing overall support for HSI work and grants programs. She always brings forth bright ideas and enthusiasm. 

Director of School Health – Karen Li 

Dr. Li identifies health and safety needs, provides vision and leadership, and collaborates with school district wellness coordinators and community partners. Her work directly impacts more than 30,000 students in our local schools. Dr. Li brings a wealth of health knowledge having been a pediatrician for many years and the Wellness Coordinator at Sequoia Union High School District prior to joining the district. 

Executive Support & Clerk of the Board – Heidi Stamper 

Ms. Stamper first joined the district as a member of the Living Healthy team in 2014. In August 2017, she took on the role of office manager, bookkeeper, and clerk of the Board, helping operations run smoothly. Her attention to detail and dedication to SHD is greatly valued.
